Having to use an old version of the Windows Kindle app was annoying, though. The ones that didn't surprised me, as they were several years old. I recently began, very slowly, converting from Kindle and Nook to port to my Kobo. This also allows format conversion, as the book was actually for my wife's Nook. I gave it a go after checking that the Amazon return policy seemed reasonable. There's been some arms racing, and I wasn't able to clear the DRM from some (ironically, public domain and $0) kindle books a while back, but had no trouble with a big bestseller just a week ago. There are tools for removing ebook DRM that are probably a little confusing to start with, but are pretty slick lately.
